South Korea's Jeju Air Boeing 737 crash may have killed 179 people, suspected cause of landing gear failure
South Korea's fire department said a plane carrying 181 passengers and crew members crashed at Muan International Airport in southwestern South Korea. The latest report from South Korea's official news agency Yonhap News Agency said that except for two people who were rescued, the remaining 179 people on board were estimated to be dead.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the flight ran off the runway and hit a wall while landing at Muan International Airport. The Jeju Air plane was returning from Bangkok, Thailand with 175 passengers and six crew members on board.
Reuters quoted a company spokesman as saying that the model of the crashed aircraft was a Boeing 737-800.
A fire official told Reuters that two people had been found alive and rescue operations were still underway.

An airport official said emergency services were trying to rescue people in the tail of the plane.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the passengers on board included 173 South Koreans and two Thais.
The cause of the crash is still unclear, but local media said it was suspected that the accident was related to hitting a flock of birds. Yonhap News Agency reported that eyewitnesses at the scene said there was a malfunction in the aircraft's landing gear.
The crash occurred at about 09:00 local time (00:00 GMT), and unverified footage uploaded to social media later showed the plane skidding off the runway and hitting a wall and catching fire.
Other videos showed large plumes of black smoke rising into the sky.
South Korea's fire department said in a statement that as of now, one flight attendant and one passenger have been rescued, and 80 firefighters and more than 30 fire trucks have been dispatched to the crash site.

Muan Airport is located approximately 178 miles (288 kilometers) south of South Korea's capital, Seoul.
South Korea's aviation industry is considered to have a good safety record. Jeju Air is one of South Korea's largest low-cost airlines. This air crash is the first fatal accident in the history of the company, which was established in 2005.
